The Tuning Engine, control by control
Every setting explained, with a preview before you save. Nothing is permanent.
The Tuning Engine shapes how your recommendations are chosen. It only affects your account, the preview shows your top 10 before you save, and Reset to site defaults undoes everything.
Start with a preset
- Site defaults: our recommended all-round settings.
- Stick to my favourites: your top genres lead strongly.
- Loosen my genre priority: more of your genres share the spotlight.
- Show me the acclaimed ones: well-reviewed films rise, judged against their own genre and era.
- Classic cinema: older films get a lift.
- Newer releases: recent films get a lift.
Then fine-tune
- How closely to follow my genre order: left shares your list around more genres; right lets your favourites dominate.
- Favour acclaimed films: lifts films rated well by lots of viewers. Balance film ratings stops older classics looking weaker just because fewer people have rated them.
- Actors and themes I love: ranks films higher when they feature actors or themes you've rated well. Gets smarter the more you rate.
- Variety: spaces out long runs of similar films.
- Era leaning: nudges older or newer films up, without removing any.
- Keep out genres I've ranked low: Off, Light (strong-flavoured genres such as animation or horror) or Strict (any genre). Genres you rank highly are never affected.
- Search a wider pool of films: looks through twice as many films per page. Helps if your favourite genres are less common; pages may load a little slower.
Advanced
- Trust my ratings over my stated order: how quickly your ratings move genres up or down. Left keeps your order firm; right lets your ratings reshape it faster.
